Shohei Ohtani made his decision on Saturday and has signed a record $700-million contract over 10 years with the Los Angeles Dodgers. That’s 70-million a year, the highest contract ever.
Ohtani was linked to the Blue Jays and several other clubs but decided on LA. A report from Los Angeles suggests the Dodgers up the ante when they found out what Ohtani was offered by the Jays.
Toronto will now try to improve its roster by signing other free agents or making trades. They also have their own prospects in the minors and on the major league roster.
The Summerside Western Capitals got their 18th win in 25 games with a 4-2 effort over Grand Falls in the MHL. Robbie Rutledge put the Caps ahead in the third and scored an empty netter.
The first place Moncton Flyers moved 5 points up on Charlottetown in Major U18, stopping the Knights, 4-1. Moncton led 3-0 in the first including two goals from Liam Daigle. Jason Batchilder scored for the Knights.
The Kensington Wild dropped the Saint John Vitos, 7-0. Evan Weeks made 30 saves for the shutout. Ethan Dickson had a pair of goals and assists. The Wild just a point back of second place Charlottetown.
Toronto shutout Nashville, 4-0 behind the goaltending of Ilya Samsonov with 18 saves. Auston Matthews scored twice.
Boston over Arizona, 5-3. David Pastranak had two goals and an assist.
Montreal trimmed Buffalo, 3-2 in a shootout.
Ottawa over Detroit, 5-1.
Jean-Gabriel Pageau had the winner early in overtime, set up by Noah Dobson as the NY Islanders won 3-2 over the LA Kings.
The Los Angeles Lakers won the inaugural NBA in-season tournament, 123-109 over Indiana.
In harness racing, Jason Hughes recorded career win number 2000 in the third race at Reds Shores in Charlottetown. He did it with Czarspieceofheaven in 2.03.
Tobins Brownie with David Dowling won the 12th race feature in 1.57/3.
On Today: Harness racing at Red Shores in Charlottetown with 13 dashes and a 12.30 post. Time To Dance with Marc Campbell is the 5-2 favourite in the 12th race feature. Campbell leads the track with 137 wins followed by Jason Hughes with 133. Hughes recorded career win 2000 on Saturday.
Kingston, PEI native James MacDonald, Canada’s leading driver, passed the $10-million mark in earnings for 2023 winning in 1.52/1 with Saulsbrook Ian on Saturday night at Woodbine Mohawk. He also leads the country with 407 wins.
Summerside visits the Amherst Ramblers this afternoon at 2.00 in MHL hockey.
Fredericton at the Charlottetown Knights in Major U18 along with Kensington Wild at the Northern Moose. Both games are 2.00 contests.
