The Toronto Maple Leafs have gotten rid of their playoff demons.
The Leafs advance to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs with a 2-1 overtime victory in Tampa Bay. John Tavares scored the winner at 4.36 in OT. The Leafs won the series in six games. It ended first round exits in each of the past six years. They advance for the first time since 2004. Auston Matthews and Steve Stamkos scored in the second period in the tight game. Toronto will play either Boston or Florida in the next round.
Edmonton is advancing, getting by Los Angeles, 5-4. Kailer Yamamoto scored the deciding goal with just over 3 minutes left.
The NY Rangers evened their series with New Jersey, forcing a Game 7. The Rangers dumped the Devils, 5-2. Vladimir Tarasenko scored the winner in the second.
The Kensington Vipers will meet the Antigonish Bulldogs in the Don Johnson Cup Jr. B final in Liverpool, Nova Scotia this afternoon at 1.00. The Vipers edged the host team, 2-1 in two overtimes. Duncan Picketts scored the game winner at 1.30 on a rebound.
The Southwest Storm will play the Tri-County River Cats in the Maritime Jr. C final this afternoon at 1.00 at the Cody Banks Arena. The Storm advanced with a 6-3 win over the Sherwood Metros in the semifinal.
Marc Campbell who led Red Shores in Charlottetown with 148 wins in 2022 won four awards at the PEI Standardbred Horse Owners Association Awards, last night. He won as the leading dash winner, top percentage driver and leading trainer. He was the leading percentage driver in Canada last year at .436. Campbell has been the leading dash winner at Red Shores in Charlottetown for 13 years since 2010.
The horse of the year for 2022 is Therealprincess, also named the top 3 year old pacing filly and pacer of the year.
The aged pacing horse of the year is Time To Dance.
The horseman of the year is Myles Heffernan, Senior.
The Ocean100/Hot 105.5 horsewoman of the year is Ambyr Campbell.
Qualifying at Red Shores in Charlottetown was held yesterday afternoon and will also go on Tuesday night at 6.00.
In Summerside, qualifiers will be out today at 1.00.
Opening night at Red Shores is coming up next Saturday at 6.00 and the first date in Summerside will be on Monday, May 22nd at 1.00 in the afternoon.
The Toronto Blue Jays are off to the best start in team history with a 1-0, 10 inning victory over the Seattle Mariners. Daulton Varsho walked it off with a home run. The Jays have won six straight and are 18-9.
Boston got by Cleveland, 8-7 in 10 innings on Alex Verdugo’s walk off single.
The Yankees lost 2-0 in Texas.
Tampa Bay is 23-5 bombing the Chicago White Sox, 12-3. The Rays scored 10 runs in the 7th.
Surprising Pittsburgh is 20-8. The Pirates blasted Washington, 16-1.
