UPEI just about upsets Victoria in USports Nationals (UPEI photo)
The #8 seed UPEI men’s basketball Panthers just about upset the #1 seeded Victoria Vikes in the U Sports nationals quarterfinals in Halifax.
The Vikes came back in the fourth quarter for a 93-92 victory led by point guard Diego Maffia who had 40 points. UPEI led 82-77 going into the final quarter. The Panthers were led by Kamari Scott with 32 points and 10 rebounds. All-Canadian Elijah Miller had 24 points.
St. FX downed Queens, 107-98 and will play Victoria in the semifinals.
UPEI meets Queens in the consolation round at 2.00 this afternoon.
The Brier is down to four teams with the Page playoffs underway. Ontario meets Wild Card Team 1 from Alberta that includes PEI’s Brett Gallant.
Matt Dunstone of Manitoba plays Team Canada’s Brad Gushue with the winner of that game going to tomorrow’s final.
Cape Breton opened a weekend series in the Q with Charlottetown, stopping the Islanders, 5-1. Charlottetown’s Cam Squires had two goals in the third period for the Eagles. Kiefer Lyons had the only Islanders goal. Charlottetown is 24-30-6 and 13th in the Q.
Summerside over the Valley Wildcats, 4-1 in the MHL where newcomer David Sibilevich from Ukraine scored his first goal. The Caps had a three goal third period. Lincoln Waugh scored the game winner. Sid McNeill had three assists. Summerside has won 7 of its last 8 and will finish second in the North.
The Kensington Vipers got by Kings County, 3-2 in Jr. B. Jesse Blanchard scored the winner.
In the battle for first place in PEI U18, Alberton got by Kings County, 7-5. Spencer Miller had four goals for the Kings. Matt Hackett had three for the Regals.
Mid Isle over Pownal, 4-2.
Florida edged Chicago, 4-3 in overtime in the NHL. Brandon Montour had the winner.
Anaheim won 3-1 in Calgary. Brett Leason had the deciding goal.
The LA Lakers over the Toronto Raptors, 122-112 in the NBA. Scottie Barnes had a career high 32 points. The Raptors are 1-4 on the western road trip.
Toronto handed Boston its first loss in preseason baseball with the Jays winning, 2-0. Zach Thompson pitched three innings allowing no hits with two strikeouts. The Red Sox are now 9-1-3 this spring while the Jays are 8-6-1.
The Yankees trimmed Detroit, 4-3.
In the World Baseball Classic, Japan is 2-0, dropping Korea, 13-4.

The semi-finals are on today in Halifax in the U Sports Men’s Basketball championship. ST. FX will play Victoria tonight after the Vikes just barely got by UPEI, 93-92 in the quarterfinals. UPEI meets Queens in the consolation round at 2.00 this afternoon.

The Charlottetown Knights look to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the PEI Major U 18 hockey finals as they host the Kensington Wild at 6.00 at the Bell Aliant Centre.
