Corey MacPherson wins Driver’s Championship
Corey MacPherson won the 2022 Driver’s Championship on Saturday at Red Shores in Charlottetown with a pair of wins, a second and four third place finishes. The Cornwall driver finished with 62 points. Ambyr Campbell, the top female driver on PEI, was second with 60. Among MacPherson’s wins was Mr Reilly in the 13th race feature in 1.55/1.
The Charlottetown Knights have been on a tear in Major Under 18 hockey this season and they’re in the semi-finals in the Monctonian this morning after doubling Rothesay Netherwood, 4-2 in the quarter-finals. Jonah MacDonald had two goals and Carson Griffin scored the winner. The Knights play Saint John in the semi’s.
The playoffs are underway in the Early Bird Minor Hockey Tournament in Charlottetown with the finals this afternoon at the Cody Banks Arena and the Bell Aliant Centre.
The Charlottetown Islanders shaded the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, 3-2 in a shootout in the Q. The Huskies led 2-0 but Kieran Gallant tied the game in the third period.
Moncton trimmed UPEI, 3-2 in AUS women’s hockey. Sophie Bujold and Orianna McNeil scored for the Panthers (7-6-1). Alexia Deforges had two for the Aigles Bleu.
The Boston Bruins have tied the NHL record for most consecutive wins at home to start the season at 11.
The Bruins dropped Chicago, 6-1 led by David Pastrnak with two goals. Chicago set the record in 1963 and Florida tied it in 2021.
Toronto upended Buffalo, 5-2. William Nylander scored twice.
Montreal got by Philadelphia, 5-4 in a shootout. Nick Suzuki provided the winner.
Edmonton over Las Vegas, 4-3 in overtime on Connor McDavid’s 16th goal.
Alberton Regals held off the Central Attack, 6-4 in PEI U18. Noah Phillips had three goals. Travis Wedge scored twice in the third.
Richibucto got by the Kensington Vipers, 4-3 in a shootout. The Vipers came back trailing 3-0 in the first period.
UPEI stopped UNB, 69-58 in AUS women’s basketball. Lauren Rainford has 20 points.
The men’s Panthers lost their second straight, 82-79 in overtime to the Reds. Elijah Miller had 20 points.
Both Panther teams are 5-2.
Atlanta Hawks over the Toronto Raptors, 124-122 in overtime in the NBA. Scottie Barnes had 28 points for Toronto.
SUNDAY LINEUP
The finals in the Early Bird Minor Hockey Tournament are on today at the Cody Banks Arena in Sherwood with the U11 at 12.30, the U13 at 2.00, followed by the U15 at 3.30 and the U18 at 5.00 in the AA tourney. The U11A final at 12.30 and the U18 AA female at 3.00 at the Bell Aliant Centre at UPEI.
The Summerside Western Capitals will try to end a two game losing skid with a game in Fredericton against the Red Wings in the MHL.
Harness racing at 12.30 at Red Shores in Charlottetown and a 13-dash card. Stash It Away with Marc Campbell driving is the favourite in the 12th race feature.
Holland College visits UNB Saint John and women’s and men’s basketball in the ACAA.
