The Eastern Canadian Under-16 Girls Softball Championship opens in O’Leary Thursday. PEI has two teams in the tournament, one from the east and one from the west.
PEI will begin the Under 15 National Baseball Tournament in Summerside Thursday. The Island team is coached by Kevin MacLean and has players from all over the province.

The Moncton Wildcats scored two quick goals in the third period to defeat the Charlottetown Islanders 4-2 to start the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League pre-season. On Friday, Charlottetown plays at Moncton at 7 p.m.
Lorie Kane doesn’t tee off until Thursday afternoon, but play is underway at the C-P Women’s Open at the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club. Canadians Brooke Henderson and Alena Sharp were among the golfers with early tee-off times.
Canadian tennis star Milos Raonic won’t be competing at the final Grand Slam of the season. The 26-year-old from Thornhill, Ontario announced in an Instagram post that he was pulling out of the U-S Open with a left wrist injury. Raonic said he underwent a procedure to remove part of the bone that was causing the discomfort.
The Toronto Blue Jays knocked it out of the park — over and over and over again on Wednesday. Kevin Pillar hit a tiebreaking solo shot in the eighth inning for the sixth Toronto homer of the game as the Jays edged the Tampa Bay Rays 7-6. Elsewhere, Baltimore edged Oakland 8-7 in 12 innings; Boston dumped Cleveland 6-1; and the N.Y. Yankees pounded Detroit 10-2
