Old Home Week Racing is off to a fast start.
Adkins Hanover won the 11th race feature on Friday night in 1.54/1 with Kenny Arsenault in the bike.
There are two cards of racing today. The 1.00 program has 12 dashes featuring the Atlantic Sire Stakes for 3 year old fillies.
Tonight, Sobey’s Gold Cup & Saucer Trial 1 with seven entries going in the $12,500 race.
The favourites include Always At My Place and driver Marc Campbell and Shadow Place with Gilles Barrieau behind in Race 12. Windsong Leo has the rail. Other entries include Governor’s Plate winner Do Over Hanover, Skyway Boomer, Stover, and Crombie A. The top four will advance to next Saturday’s Gold Cup & Saucer final. You can hear the race call with track announcer Vance Cameron tonight on Ocean 100 just after 10 p.m.

Trial 2 also has seven starters and goes Monday night.

PEI finished 11th in men’s soccer at the Canada Games in Winnipeg with a 1-0 blanking of the Northwest Territories. Simon Bitar with the only goal of the game.
PEI was 8th in boys golf and 9th in girls. Jason Poley on Stratfore tied for 13th in the individual competition.
PEI competed but lost in three boys bronze medal matches in wrestling but all three finished fourth. Christian MacDonald, Jesse Heartz and Ben Tanton just missed a medal.
The Games wrap up officially on Sunday. Swimmer Alexa McQuaid who won a silver will carry the PEI flag into the closing ceremonies.

18 year old Denis Shapovalov is making making a name for himself in the Rogers Cup in tennis in Montreal.
The Richmond Hill, Ontario native has reached the semi-finals by defeating France’s Adrian Mannarino in three sets after upsetting #1 seed Rafael Nadal earlier in the week. Shapovalov meets Alexander Zeverev of Germany in the semi-final today.

A bad third inning resulted in Marcus Stroman the Toronto Blue Jays losing 4-3 to the Pittsburgh Pirates. A hit batter and fielding miscues allowed the Pirates to score four times. Jose Bautista became only the second Jay to hit 20 home runs in eight straight seasons tying Carlos Delgado. The Jays also lost catcher Russell Martin with left oblique strain.
The New York Yankees used a 5 run 8th inning to come back and beat the Boston Red Sox, 5-4 in the Bronx. Aaron Hicks hit a two run homer in the big inning. Boston up by 3.5 on the Yankees this morning.
Cleveland shutout Tampa Bay, 5-0 on a 2 hitter by Carlos Carrasco.
In other MLB news…former Yankee great Derek Jeter and NBA legend MIchael Jordan are among a group that has agreed to buy the Miami Marlins from Jeffrey Loria for $1.2 billion.

CFL football saw the Montreal Alouettes down the Toronto Argonauts, 21-9. Both teams with losing records but tied for first in the East.

Canada is in the final in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial in the World U-18 hockey championship today facing the host Czech Republic. Canada took care of Sweden, 4-1 in the semi-final while the Czechs advanced by getting by Russia, 2-1.
