Summerside Police have charged a dog owner under the new Animal Welfare Act.
Last Friday afternoon, shortly after 3:00, Summerside Police were called about five dogs locked in a vehicle. Police responded to the scene to find the five dogs locked in a vehicle, parked outside a local store, with the windows only down about an inch. The dogs did not have any water, and witnesses told police that the animals had been in the vehicle for at least 30 minutes in the 31 degree heat.
The dog owner was located and charged under the new legislation which sees the fine for a first offense as $500.
The dogs were immediately given water, cooled off and did not suffer any prolonged distress.
