PEI Marathon day was Sunday and the top eight finishers are from out of province but some good performances from Islanders.
45 year old Trevor Funk of Saint John, NB is the winner of the 2019 PEI Marathon with a time of 2 hours, 43 minutes and 11 seconds.
2nd went to Eaton Seagrave of Toronto.
Top three Islanders were Alex Bain of Oyster Bed Bridge who finished 9th, Darren Chaisson of Souis who was 13th and Andrew Bryenton of Charlottetown who was 14th.
Helga Reisch Macneil of Kensington was the top female finisher in 3 hours, 12 minutes and 43 seconds. She was 15th overall.
Last year’s winner, Stan Chaisson of Charlottetown did not compete after taking part in the Chicago Marathon.
The winner, Trevor Funk, says his only regret was his 19 year old son couldn’t compete after undergoing an emergency appendectomy only a week ago. He says they would both like to compete in the Boston Marathon together someday.
Funk says the course was good – not too breezy but difficult considering the hills. He says the wind was not a factor.
He’s competed in 22 marathons and this among his best. Funk was pretty well on his own leading the pack in the 26.2 mile event. He’s that there were a few runners he could see behind him for the first few kilometres but he was on his own most of the way.
Funk says this has been his best year yet in running. He says maintaining a strong training schedule was the key to winning the PEI event.
