A marine biologist speaking before the PEI Legislature’s Standing Committee on Fisheries says effluent from the proposed new pipeline from Northern Pulp in Pictou Harbour could harm the spawning grounds for fish including herrring.
Melanie Griffin, who works with the PEI Fishermen’s Association says the pipeline project should be reviewed by the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency.
Griffin says the effects of global warming have not been taken into account.
The pipeline would pump between 70 and 90 million litres of effluent into the Northumberland Strait each day beginning in 2020.
