The strong winds caused a number of issues across PEI on Tuesday.
The winds caused several widespread power outages. As of 5pm Tuesday, Mariting Electric had knocked the number of customers without power down to about 1280. Maritime Electric says its crews will be working all night to restore power from the wind storm. Their Contact Centre will remain open. The goal is to get the majority on by midnight Tuesday night, but they expect they may still be restoring power into Wednesday. There were some early school closures Tuesday because of the power outages caused by the winds.
The Montague, Westisle, and Three Oaks families of schools were all closing at 12:30pm Tuesday due to the power outages. The French language schools in Evangeline, Tignish, and Summerside were all closing early at 12:30pm.
Maritime Electric crews are dealing with a number of outages.
The high winds are also impacting travel between PEI and the mainland. Traffic restrictions have been in place on the Confederation Bridge at times as a Wind Warning Advisory is in effect until about 8:00 in the evening. For a brief time Tuesday morning, there had been a full bridge closure. It is best to check ahead if you’re travelling.
Northumberland Ferries has cancelled all its sailings for Tuesday.
