Opposition Leader James Aylward says the confusion over tax implications of financial support for caregiving grandparents needs to be resolved swiftly by the province.
The CRA is considering reducing the federal benefit given to grandparents getting payments from the P-E-I government through its Grandparents and Care Providers program.
Aylward says being prime caregivers brings financial challenges to grandparents, so the last they need is to have added challenges because the proper due diligence wasn’t done beforehand by government.
Aylward says the issue needs to be resolved quickly so that these caregivers are properly supported.
Family and Human Services Minister Tina Mundy has said she’ll be reaching out to some Federal Ministers and the Island’s four MPs to discuss the issue.
