The $4,300 featured pace on Canada Day Tuesday at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway was won by Roll Em in 1:53.1 as the Landon Campbell trainee went right to the front and controlled every step of the race for driver Marc Campbell and co-owners Savage Stable, Brent Campbell and Ryan MacLeod. Live harness racing continues Thursday evening at Red Shores Charlottetown.
George Springer hit two home runs, including a grand slam, as the Toronto Blue Jays celebrated Canada Day by dumping the visiting New York Yankees 12-5. The Red Sox game against Cincinnati was suspended after three innings with Boston up 2-1 over the Reds and the game to be completed today.
In the New Brunswick Senior Baseball league, the Charlottetown Islanders lost 6-5 in Fredericton to the Royals.
Tuesday was Free Agency day in the NHL. Brock Boeser surprisingly stayed put in Vancouver. The New York Rangers landed free agency’s top defenceman in Vladislav Gavrikov. Mitch Marner’s move to Vegas became official. Nikolaj Ehlers of the Winnipeg Jets is taking his time before determining his future. Tuesday’s opening of free agency was tempered with available options thinned by N-H-L teams making pre-emptive moves to secure top talent.
