On Monday, officials with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans saw an entangled North Atlantic right whale in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, near Morell. DFO says it is a juvenile male, born in 2021, which was first sighted entangled off North Carolina in December 2024. The entangled whale was recently sighted on May 27th at near Les Escoumins in the St. Lawrence Estuary. DFO is trying to relocate the whale, and if it can, and conditions are right, they will try to disentangle it. The P.E.I. Fishermen’s Association says the whale’s presence has resulted in a fishing area off Naufrage being restricted – some lobster boats have to remove their traps while some can continue fishing with whale-safe gear.
