Health Minister Mark McLane says new guidelines for family physicians introduced last month by Health PEI are still in draft form, and there’s six weeks to gather feedback. McLane made the comments in an interview with CBC on Monday. Last month, Health PEI introduced key performance indicators that include a requirement that each family doctor see 24 patients a day, and that each full-time family doctor’s practice should have a minimum of 1,600 patients. The Medical Society of PEI suggests those targets will result in doctors leaving the province, and that it was planning for legal action against Health PEI on the matter. Minister McLane is expressing confidence that a compromise can be reached.
