The Provincial government has announced a review of safety policies within its Education Department and its French and English-language public schools, following a series of incidents related to student safety. The government says David Jenkins, a former chief justice of the P-E-I Court of Appeal, will lead the review. The goal of the review is to identify vulnerabilities in existing safeguards, recommend improvements and propose new measures to better protect schoolchildren. The announcement of the review comes after a former substitute teacher recently pleaded guilty to sexual interference for an incident in which he sexually touched a girl in a classroom in a primary school in PEI. Education Minister Robin Croucher says he expects the review will take several months to complete before it is publicly released.
