Buildings in Jasper are burning, and the air quality has deteriorated to a level so bad that wildland firefighters have been forced to evacuate to a nearby town.
Officials say the only people still in the mountain town are structural firefighters, who stayed behind to protect key infrastructure and save as many buildings as possible.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says she is heartbroken to hear about the damage and is advising people to rely on each other during this hard time.
Federal Emergency Preparedness Minister Harjit Sajjan says a request from Alberta has been approved to allow for immediate and urgent support from the federal government.
