Paramedics in PEI now have more options for treating patients beyond just taking them to an emergency room. Island E-M-S is introducing new protocols aimed at relieving pressure on the health care system. Previously, paramedics were required to take all patients to the emergency department — and as many as 35 per cent of patients would refuse transport, leaving them on their own to access further care. Now, specialized paramedic teams will be equipped to provide diagnostics and treatments in a patient’s home, and connect patients to other health care professionals
