P-E-I is the only province in Canada who says it has legislation recognizing housing as a human right. The Canadian Press asked each province if it recognizes housing as a human right and if it plans to introduce legislation upholding that right. P-E-I pointed to its tenancies act, which opens by acknowledging that Canada recognizes a fundamental right to housing. The federal housing advocate recommended in February that all provinces adopt legislation recognizing and upholding housing as a fundamental human right.
