Inmates at PEI’s Provincial Correctional Centre are getting more access to telephone services. It’s the result of an inquiry into multiple complaints received by OmbudsPEI. Inmates were being limited to a small list of approved telephone contacts — a list typically restricted to close family members. OmbudsPEI was concerned that PEI was taking an overly restrictive approach, and as a result of lengthy consultations, inmates are now allowed permitted to call any number — as long as it doesn’t go against court imposed conditions. PEI was the only province in Canada to limit inmates’ contact in that way.
