A reminder from PEI RCMP for anyone hiking on Island trail systems that they received extensive damage from Hurricane Fiona, so actual trails may not be visible or even useable. The reminder comes after a hiker got lost in the woods early Sunday afternoon near Cable Head. There was intermittent cell service, but the hiker was able to call 9-1-1 and provide their exact location to police by GPS. They couldn’t get to a trail as the woods were very dense and there was damage from Hurricane Fiona. It was so bad that the St. Peter’s Volunteer Fire Department had to call in a bulldozer to get the person. They were located safe and sound after a three-hour recovery effort, and did require minor treatment from Island EMS for dehydration. PEI RCMP say you should never hike alone; you should tell close contacts of your intentions; and bring a cell phone with you.
