Opening night for live harness racing at Red Shores in Charlottetown starts this evening with post time at 6.00 to begin the spring-summer-fall meet. 15 dashes are on the card.
The Carolina Hurricanes have a 2-0 lead in their Stanley Cup second round series, dropping the New Jersey Devils, 6-1. Jesper Kotkaniemi scored twice as the Canes opened a 4-0 lead in the second period.
The Charlottetown Power (5-4) won their third straight, 100-91 over the Bathurst Bears (1-9) in the Eastern Canadian Basketball League. Zack Hinton led the attack with 27 points. Adam Stanford added 23. A bigger test this afternoon for the Power as they host the first place Truro Tide which is 9-0.
The Toronto Blue Jays ended a 5 game losing streak blanking the Pirates, 4-0 in Pittsburgh. George Springer homered and Chris Bassitt improved to 4-2, pitching 7 innings and allowing only four hits.
Boston is 19-14 winning a 7th straight game, 5-3 in Philadelphia. Chris Sale got his 3rd win going six innings and striking out 10.
East leading Tampa Bay edged the NY Yankees, 5-4 at the Trop. Wander Franco drove in the go ahead run in the 7th. The Rays are 18-2 at home.
Baltimore over the Atlanta Braves, 9-4. The Orioles scored 7 times in the 7th. Anthony Santander hit two home runs and drove in five.
The Boston Celtics have a 2-1 lead in the second round of the NBA playoffs with a 114-102 effort over Philadelphia. Jayson Tatum had 27 points and 10 rebounds.
It’s a happy 90th birthday to PEI Sports Hall of Fame chair Paul H. Schurman today. The former star baseball and hockey player in the 50’s is also a member of the Hall of Fame (1992) as a multi-sport athlete and broadcaster. He was also a driving force in establishing the PEI Sports Hall of Fame in 1968. He’s also been involved with the PEI Curling Hall of Fame and Meals on Wheels in Summerside for many years and other worthy causes in the city.
SATURDAY SCHEDULE
The 135th season of harness racing begins tonight with post time at 6.00 at Red Shores in Charlottetown to begin the spring-summer meet. The Charlottetown Driving Park opened on October 2nd, 1889. Tonight there are 15 dashes on the program. Matticulous GB, raised in the British Isles, is the 5-2 favourite in the 15th race feature for driver Ken Murphy. The eight year old is owned by Debbie Element of Village Green and Matt and David Burke of Stratford. Marc Campbell, who’s won 13 straight driver’s titles at the track enters the new season with a CDP leading 17 victories in 29 starts in January and February.
Qualifying begins at 1.00 this afternoon prior to opening night.
The track will be closed on Sunday and Monday for grading that begins Sunday morning at 8.00.
The 149th Kentucky Derby goes tonight at Churchill Downs in Louisville in a field of 19. The race goes this evening.
Among the favourites are Tapit Trice and Angel Of Empire. The overall favourite, Forte has been scratched.
This year marks 50 years since the Secretariat won the Triple Crown in 1973 including the record that still stands in the Run for the Roses in 1.59/2 in Louisville.
The unbeaten Truro Tide visits the Charlottetown Power in Eastern Canadian basketball at 2.00 this afternoon at the Eastlink Centre.
