PEI is going for Bronze today in Ringette!
PEI’s ringette team will go for a bronze medal at the Canada Games this afternoon at 3.00 after losing the semi-final game, 11-4 to Quebec.
PEI will play Saskatchewan at 3.00 at the MacLauchlan Arena.
PEI’s Ella Lenentine rink finished 8th in curling with a 10-6 loss to BC.
The Canada Games is into transition weekend with 1,600 athletes leaving PEI and another 1,600 coming for Week 2. That means the Charlottetown Airport will be busy. 11 chartered flights will be coming in and then leaving. Quebec leads with 62 medals won including 24 gold this week.
One of PEI’s top goalies of the 1980’s passed away on Thursday after battling cancer. Dave Reid starred for the Sherwood-Parkdale Metros Atlantic Junior champions in 1979 and 1980 and with the UPEI Panthers Atlantic champs in 1985. He is being remembered as a great teammate who was always smiling as well as being a top goaltender throughout his career. He would have turned 62 in May. He leaves behind his wife Corinne and two daughters Janna and Rebecca. Visiting hours at the Hennessey Cutcliffe Funeral Home in Charlottetown on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. Funeral on Monday at 10.30 a.m. at the funeral home chapel.
The UPEI women’s basketball Panthers are in the AUS semifinals and will play Saint Mary’s this evening. UPEI got by Cape Breton, 71-67 in the quarterfinal. Rookie point guard Samantha Zoffranieri had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Aiden Rainford with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Lauren Rainford had 15 points.
The men’s Panthers play Dalhousie in the semifinals tonight in Halifax.
First place Holland College over UNB Saint John, 100-78 in men’s basketball.
The Hurricanes won the women’s game, 89-54.
The Charlottetown Islanders had a rare home morning game in the Q and got by Shawinigan, 5-4. Simon Hughes scored the game winner with only about 3 minutes left.
Summerside got by Grand Falls, 3-2 in the MHL. Trent Crane scored twice including the winner midway through the last period.
Toronto edged Minnesota, 2-1 in overtime on a goal by William Nylander.
Montreal over Philadelphia, 5-2. Nick Suzuki with the winner.
Los Angeles got by the NY Islanders, 3-2. Noah Dobson scored his 12th of the season the for the Isles.
Carolina shutout Ottawa, 4-0.
The Boston Red Sox began the Grapefruit League in baseball with 5-3 win over Northeastern University of Brookline, Ma.
