Team PEI 2o23 Canada Games
A celebration of Team PEI was held last night at the Prince Edward Hotel in Charlottetown featuring the athletes that will compete in the Canada Games hosted in PEI beginning February 18th.
Over 235 athletes, coaches, support and mission staff will represent the Island. 22 teams will compete in 18 sports.
Ryan Dwyer, who plays for the Charlottetown Knights in Major Under 18 hockey and curler Ella Lenentine will be the flag bearers for PEI in the opening ceremonies.
Dwyer is competing in both hockey and gymnastics in the first week. He’s from Stratford.
Lenentine is from New Dominion and will skip the PEI women’s curling rink in the first week and will be on the mixed doubles team in the second week.
The Grand Falls Rapids edged the Summerside Western Capitals, 3-2 in the MHL. Dominic Leblanc scored the winner with nine minutes left. Trent Crane got his 26th and Marc Richard scored his 35th for the Caps. Summerside remains two points out of first place in the North.
The NY Islanders blanked the Seattle Kraken, 4-0 as Bo Horvat scored his first goal for the Isles.
Edmonton over Detroit, 5-2. Warren Foegele had two goals for the Oilers.
San Jose got by Tampa Bay, 4-3 in overtime. Tim Meier got the winner.
Pittsburgh trimmed Colorado, 2-1 in OT. Kris Letang had the winner.
Las Vegas dumped Nashville, 5-1. Phil Kessel got his 10th.
Anaheim edged Chicago, 3-2 in overtime. Frank Vatrano with the deciding goal.
LeBron James broke Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s NBA scoring record and pushed his career total to 38,388 points but the LA Lakers lost 133-130 to Oklahoma City.
UPEI’s Subway athletes of the week are women’s hockey player McKinley Nelson who has six goals in her last five games. She had three goals last weekend.
Cameron Brown of the men’s basketball Panthers rookie forward also gets the nod with a breakout weekend averaging 12 points a game facing Dal and Saint Mary’s.
Holland College’s athletes of the week are volleyball’s Morgan White and basketball star Jalen Menzies who had 36 points in a win over Mount St. Vincent last weekend. The Canes are in first place at 10-3. Both also got the nod as ACAA athletes of the week.
Wednesday Lineup
The UPEI men’s hockey Panthers host the Moncton Aigles Bleu in their final home game of the regular season at 7.00 at the MacLauchlan Arena.
The Panthers have gone 2-8 in their last 10 and are 3 points back of the second place Saint Mary’s Huskies with 2 games left.
UPEI is 3-1 vs. Moncton.
