The province is introducing new license plates – and for the first time, there will be a distinct plate for electric vehicles. Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Cory Deagle made the announcement in the legislature Wednesday, saying it’s been almost a decade since PEI had a new license plate design and it’s time for a refresh. With a white backing, green bold lettering and the Province’s Coat of Arms, Deagle says the traditional, simple design will allow for greater visibility as they start getting into 6-digit numbering. Conservation plates will still be available in the new plate design, and the funds from the sale of those plates are being donated to the Wildlife Conservation Fund. You’ll also have the new option to purchase a Canada’s Food Island license plate, and all proceeds from the sale of those plates will be donated to Island Food Banks.
The cost will be $5 for a new license plate and $10 for a conservation or Canada’s Food Island plate. They will be available in late December at Access PEI locations, but you will not be required to purchase a new design plate when you renew your registration if the current plate is in good condition.
