By 11:00pm on Friday, wind gusts had escalated to over 80kh at Charlottetown Airport, over 70kh in Summerside, and up to 114kh on the Confederation Bridge. Those wind gusts will only get stronger overnight when they could reach 120kh to 130kh, potentially causing damage.
As those winds escalated, we started to see some power outages develop. As of 11:30pm, Maritime Electric was reporting that more than 1,300 customers were without power with outages affecting areas of Charlottetown; areas near Murray River and Montague; up east near Souris; Brackley Beach; Marshfield; and areas near Wellington and Tignish.
PEI will also see totals of 50mm to 100mm of rain, possibly 150mm in some areas with the higher amounts being in Kings County.
On Friday night, Public Safety PEI and PEI Emergency Measures Organization has been asking Islanders to:
* Stay home and stay safe
* Don’t be on the roads unless you need to be
* Don’t go near the water due to storm surge / flooding risk
Authorities issued an Emergency Alert late in the afternoon advising of severe flooding along PEI’s northern shoreline during Hurricane Fiona. You should avoid shorelines as waves are extremely dangerous. An historic storm surge as high as 2.5 metres is expected along the Island’s northern coastline, but storm surge is an issue at any coastline on PEI.
