Patient medical homes have been set up at five PEI primary care locations to help shift primary health care from family doctors to collaborative health centres.
The model has been developed by the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
Health Minister Ernie Hudson says this will give Islanders much quicker access in many cases.
Under the new system, a family doctor may not be the person you see for a health issue.
Such as consulting with a dietician if that professional can help with a diet issue.
Green Party MLA Michele Beaton likes the idea but says it should also include social workers and mental health professionals.
Liberal MLA Robert Henderson believes it’s the same system that exists now and just renaming collaborative practices.
The five Patient Medical Homes will be:
The Polyclinic and Parkdale Medical Centre in Charlottetown
Sherwood Medical Centre
Kinlock Medical Centre in Stratford
Kensington Health Care Centre
Cornwall Health Centre and Crapaud Health Centre
