A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for all of PEI with upwards of 20 to 45 cm of snow possible. That snow will be whipped around by peak wind gusts of up to 90 km/h.
Kings and Queens Counties could see 10 cm in snow Friday afternoon, and then another 20 to 30 cm on Friday night. Prince County can expect 5 cm of snow Friday afternoon and then another 15 to 25 cm Friday night. Northeast winds across PEI will be gusting to 70 km/h Friday afternoon, and increase to gusts of 90 to 100 km/h late tonight. Those strong winds will create whiteout conditions in some area with blowing snow,
Conditions across the Island are expected to improve Saturday with snow ending near noon then a mix of sun and cloud. Kings and Queens Counties could see a further 5cm of snow on Saturday morning.
Snow started across much of PEI by late Friday morning. With heavy snow and strong winds in the forecast for Friday afternoon, there have been a number of closures and cancellations across PEI. All provincial civil service offices across PEI closed as of 12:30 pm. A number of Health PEI services, including all Health PEI Vaccination Clinics, were closed by noon.
Holland College and UPEI also closed early because of the storm.
