The driver of a truck hauling 27 bales of straw to a farm managed to escape without injury after the straw caught fire along Route 2 in Travellers Rest on Friday afternoon. The highway between the two roundabouts north of Summerside had to be closed briefly as the Kensington Fire Department, Island EMS and the RCMP arrived on the scene.
The driver believes the hot exhaust led to the straw bales catching fire. He got out of the cab when he noticed the flames but had to jump back in since the truck was under power lines.
The fire department arrived a few minutes later and got the blaze under control.
