The UPEI men’s hockey Panthers clinched a playoff spot while ending a six game losing skid as they edged the Dalhousie Tigers, 4-3 in overtime in Halifax. Owen Headrick, second in scoring among defensemen, scored twice and Matt Brassard got the OT winner on a 2 on 1 breakout set up by Kameron Keilly who had 3 assists. T.J. Shea also scored for the Panthers.
The UNB Reds won their 11th straight, 4-2 over second place Acadia. Brady Gilmour scored the game winner for the first place Reds.
Saint Mary’s downed Moncton, 5-1.
CAPS TAKE SECOND STRAIGHT LOSS
The Summerside Western Capitals have lost two in a row for the first time this season in the MHL, losing 3-2 in Campbellton. Coleton Perry scored the game winner, his second of the contest in the 3rd. Goalie Isaak Pelletier made 36 saves allowing goals to Carson MacKinnon and Riley MacDougall of the Caps. Summerside has only six regulation time losses all season.
QUEBEC MAJOR JUNIOR
Cape Breton stopped Acadie-Bathurst, 6-4 in the Q. Derek Gentile scored three times. Island native Bennett MacArthur got his 5th goal for the Titan.
Islander Jordan Spence got his 7th goal plus an assist helping the Moncton Wildcats to a 4-2 win over Shawinigan.
PEI HOCKEY
The Kensington Wild over Cape Breton West, 6-1 in Major Midget. Donovan Arsenault had 2 goals, 2 assists. Austin Arsenault also scored twice.
The Charlottetown Knights edged the Northern Moose, 3-2 in O’Leary. Colby Huggan, Cam MacLean and Gabe Harlen scored for the Knights.
The first place Western Red Wings moved 20 points up on second place Sherwood with a 5-2 win in Kensington over the Vipers in Jr. B.
Tignish dropped Georgetown, 7-4 in Jr. C while North River got by Summerside, 5-4 in overtime.
Pownal blanked Kings County, 5-0 in the Midget AAA in the Spud Tournament.
Mid-Isle got by the Central Attack, 2-1.
NHL
Alex Ovechkin moved into 8th place in NHL all-time scoring passing Mark Messier with two goals in Washington’s 5-3 win in Otttawa.
Boston got by Winnipeg, 2-1. Jake DeBrusk got the winner on the 3rd period power play.
Pittsburgh shaded Philadephia, 4-3 in overtime. Sidney Crosby with the winner and 2 assists.
Edmonton over St. Louis, 4-2. Leon Draisaitl scored twice.
NBA
The Toronto Raptors over the Detroit Pistons, 105-92 in the NBA. Pascal Siakam led the way with 30 points. The Raptors now 35-14.
The LA Lakers played their first home since the tragic loss of former Laker Kobe Bryant. Portland won the game, 127-119. During the warm-up Laker players all wore Kobe”s #24 and #8. LeBron James gave an emotional tribute to Bryant’s memory prior to the game at the Staples Arena.
TONY FERNANDEZ IN HOSPITAL
Toronto Blue Jays all-time great Tony Fernandez was listed in critical condition last night battling kidney disease. He played 17 years in the major league beginning in the mid 1980’s.

It’s the final day of live harness racing at Red Shores in Charlottetown until May 2nd. This afternoon’s card has 11 dashes. Hes Marvellous with Myles Heffernan Sr. in the bike is the 5-2 morning line favourite in the six-horse 11th race feature.
The O’Brien Awards for 2019 will be presented in Mississauga, Ontario tonight. Gilles Barrieau one of the top drivers at Red Shores is a finalist for horsemanship. Austin Sorrie from PEI is a finalist for the Future Stars Award, He lives in Guelph, Ontario. Island born Anthony MacDonald, also out of Guelph will be presented the Cam Fella Award for extreme meritorious service to the Canadian harness racing industry.
The 45th Spud Minor Hockey Tournament continues in rinks around Charlottetown. The finals are set for tomorrow.
The Charlottetown Islanders visit the Maritimes leading Moncton Wildcats in the Q at 4.00. You can hear the game on Ocean100 starting with the pregame show at 3.45. The Islanders are 2-3-1 facing Moncton this season.
The UPEI men’s Panthers are in Antigonish to face the St. F. X. X-Men tonight at 7.00. UPEI is 3 points back of the 5th place X-Men with two games left in the regular season.
