A pair of huge upsets in the AUS women’s basketball semi-finals in Halifax. The top two seeds were knocked out on Saturday.
Haley MacDonald put up an amazing 51 points as Acadia eliminated #2 UPEI, 88-84. Jenna Mae Ellsworth had 28 points for UPEI in the loss.

MacDonald’s 51 points is record breaking the old mark of 50 in 1976 and only the second time a player has had 50 or more points.
Memorial upset the #1 seed Cape Breton, 90-82 marking the first time since back to back championships in 2007-2008 that the Seahawks have made it to the final. They were 9-11 during the season while Cape Breton was 18-2.

Holland College as Coach Josh Whitty’s Hurricanes improved 22-0 as they ran over UNB Saint John, 94-66 in the ACAA semi-finals in Moncton. The Hurricanes are going for a 7th straight conference title and were led by Roosevelt Whyley with 25 points and nine rebounds. Martin Campbell had 22 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists.
Holland College will meet Mt.A in the final today at 3.30. The Mounties won their semi-final, 77-74 over Mount St. Vincent.

PEI’s John Likely came back from a 4-3 deficit to edge Newfoundland-Labrador’s Andrew Symonds, 5-4 as the Tim Horton’s Brier opened in Brandon, Manitoba.
Newfoundland scored two in the 9th to go ahead before Likely’s rink took two in the 10th end.

The Charlottetown Islanders lost 4-1 at Blainville last night to the Armada in the Q. Colin Van Den Hurk had the lone Islanders goal. Miguel Tourigny with the winner for the Armada in the second period as Blaineville-Boisbriand went 2-0 in their season series with Charlottetown.
The Isles now 1-1 on their five game road trip and visit Gatineau this afternoon.

The Edmonton Oilers shutout Columbus, 4-0 in the NHL. Charlottetown’s Josh Currie scored his second goal of the season set up Connor McDavid who had 3 assists. It was Game #500 for Blue Jackets defenseman Adam McQuaid of Cornwall, PEI.
John Tavares heard nothing but cheers in Toronto after his rude welcome back to New York last week. Tavares got his 37th of the season as the Leafs stopped Buffalo, 5-2.
Pittsburgh dumped Montreal, 5-1. Sidney Crosby had a goal and three assists.
Tampa Bay dropped Ottawa, 5-1 as Marc Crawford made his Sens coaching debut.
Boston blanked New Jersey, 1-0. The only goal from Brad Marchand.

The Islands two medalists led Team PEI into the closing ceremonies of the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, last night.
Mikey Perry of Brackley won a bronze in Judo while Kristen Arsenault of Wellington won silver in archery at the Games.
PEI finished two weeks of competition by finishing 9th in Badminton downing Nunavut, 3-1 in matches on Saturday.
Quebec won the medals race with 146 including 65 gold.
Alberta won the Centennial Cup as the most improved province.
PEI had 2 medals and finished 12th in the Centennial Cup team standings.
