RUSSIA GETS BY CANADA
Canada lost a tight one, 2-1 to Russia in the New Year’s Eve showdown in Vancouver.
Pavel Shen broke up a 1-1 tie with 9 minutes remaining to put the Russians ahead.
Cody Glass has the lone Canadian goal.
The USA dropped Finland, 4-1.
In other games Sweden over Kazakhstan, 4-1.
The Czechs blanked Denmark, 4-0.
Canada is 3-1. Russia now 4-0. The USA 3-0-1. Sweden is also 3-1.
Canada lost a goalies duel in the Spengler Cup final in Davos, Switzerland, 2-1 in a shootout to Kalpo from Finland.
ISLANDERS MAKE IT THREE STRAIGHT SINCE BREAK
The Charlottetown Islanders are hot to begin the second half of the Q season.
The Isles won their third straight, 4-1 in Saint John over the Sea Dogs. Nikita Alexandrov scored twice. He’s scored in each of his last four games.
Halifax stopped Cape Breton, 7-1. The Islanders remain 3 points back of the first place Mooseheads.
Moncton downed Acadie-Bathurst, 6-3. Jeremy McKenna and Jordan Spence had assists.
CAPS KEEP ROLLING
The North leading Summerside Western Capitals ended the 2018 portion of their schedule with a win.
Summerside drop the Valley Wildcats, 4-1 as Brodie MacArthur scored twice. Summerside is 22-5.
Over 3-thousand fans took in the free game at Credit Union Place.
Two straight shutouts for New Jersey Devils rookie goalie MacKenzie Blackwood who made 25 saves in a 4-0 win over Vancouver.
Montreal got by Dallas, 3-2 in overtime in the NHL. Jeff Petry with the winner only 14 seconds into OT.
Tampa Bay got by Anaheim, 2-1 in overtime. Brayden Point with the winner and an assist.
Johnny Gaudreau had a pair of goals and assists as Calgary outlasted San Jose, 8-5.
Winnipeg edged Edmonton, 4-3. Brendan Lemieux scored the winner at 14.02 in the third.
Columbus over Ottawa, 6-3.
Sidney Crosby and Phil Kessel both scored as Pittsburgh got by Minnesota, 3-2.
Nashville bumped Washington, 6-3. Ryan Johansen had a goal and 2 assists for the Predators.
STORMY DAYS FOR THE STORM
The Island Storm (2-8) can’t shake a long losing streak in the NBL.
The Storm lost 94-85 to first place Moncton (12-3).
That’s 7 straight losses for the Storm.
Cory Allmond led the Magic with 18 points.
Kareem Canty had 25 for the Storm.
CAMPBELL WINS FIVE
Marc Campbell drove five winners in harness racing at Red Shores including Sock It Away in the 12th in 1.57/3 winning over Winter Blast.
Not many games today on New Year’s Day in hockey and basketball.
But a number of U-S College bowl games in football including 12-1 Ohio State facing Washington in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
