Islanders will now have the option whether or not to identify their gender on their driver’s license.
As of Tuesday, December 4th on PEI licenses, government has added two new non-binary gender options of ‘gender not listed’ and ‘prefer not to say,’ which join the existing ‘male’ and ‘female’ options.
The selections will appear as X, blank, M, and F respectively.
Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy Minister Paula Biggar says adding the options is an important step in advancing equal human rights for everyone.
Some other provinces and the federal government already allow for an option X or gender not listed but PEI is the first jurisdiction in Canada to allow for the ‘prefer not to say’ or blank option.
