The 2018 provincial student assessment results were released Tuesday. Generally, the 2018 results show that math results continue to improve in most areas, but students need more help in primary writing and elementary reading.
In reading specifically, there were increases in the number of students meeting expectations in Grade 3 English and Grade 3 french immersion. But, grade 6 reading has seen a dramatic decline in the past two years, down to 59% of students meeting expectations in 2018, from 64% in 2017 and 82% in 2016.
In Grade 11 math, 73% of students are meeting expectations in Foundations of Math, which is up from 60% in 2016. Grade 11 pre-calculus math sees 84% of students meeting expectations in 2018, up from 79% in 2017.
However, Grade 11 workplace math had the lowest score of all in the 2018 assessment. Only 39% of students are meeting expectations in 2018, down from 47% in each of 2017 and 2016.
