OPENING NIGHT WIN
The new Quebec Major Junior Hockey season opened on a good note for the Charlottetown Islanders who doubled the visiting Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, 4-2.
Daniel Hardy scored twice including the winner and Matt Welsh made 33 saves.
Halifax is in town tonight to play the Islanders. The Mooseheads began their Memorial Cup hosting year by edging Saint John, 5-4.
Moncton over defending Memorial Cup champion, Acadie-Bathurst, 3-1.
CAPS LOSE 2ND IN A ROW
The St. Stephen County Aces built up a 5-1 lead in the first period and cruised to a 9-6 win over the visiting Summerside Western Capitals in the MHL.
TJ Shea, last year’s scoring champion had a big night for the Caps with 4 goals and an assist. Summerside is 1-2.
PRIDE WINS IN MAJOR MIDGET
The Charlottetown Pride got by the Saint John Vitos, 6-4 in Major Midget. Declan MacEachern picked up a hat trick while Cole Larkin added two goals. The Pride 2-0.
UPEI STOPS SMU
The UPEI women Panthers got by Saint Mary’s, 4-1 in exhibition action. Jolena Gillard scored twice including a powr play goal for UPEI

BASEBALL
The Tampa Bay Rays routed the Toronto Blue Jays, 11-3. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had two home runs.

Gurriel’s brother Yuri hit a grand slam and had a 2 run shot as Houston clinched a playoff spot with an 11-3 romp over the Angels.

The Holland College Hurricanes have their home opener in Atlantic Football as they entertain the UNB Saint John Seawolves at 1.00 at UPEI. The Canes downed UNB last week, 22-17.
