One of them is Vern Handrahan who pitched for the Kansas City A’s in 1964 and 1966 and had a long and productive minor league career.
A plaque for a monument dedicated to Vern was unveiled at a special ceremony at the Canadian Oldtimers Baseball Championship this week.
The tournament is underway at Memorial Field in Victoria Park where Vern played his minor baseball. He once struck out 19 batters in a game when he was with Boise, Idaho facing Great Falls, Montana in 1962.
Greg Stapleton who chaired a committee that made this possible says it took about 2 years to make it happen. Planning for the monument began in March, 2017. Charlottetown councillor Terry MacLeod, Deputy Mayor Mike Duffy, Dr. Bobby Lund (who played with Vern) and Ocean 100’s Dave Holland made up the committee.
