Borden-Kinkora MLA Jamie Fox says provincial conservation officers need to treat seniors more fairly following a recent incident where he says an 86 year-old visiting family in the province had their fishing rod seized and were fined $270.
Angling licenses are free of charge for those 60 years of age or older, although seniors are still required to pay a $13 Wildlife Conservation Fund fee.
Fox says officers have alternatives to fining seniors and seizing a fishing rod, saying they they can educate them about the rules and work with them to comply. He says this is a clear case of government being more concerned with collecting fines and it is a poor message to send to seniors and tourists
Fox is urging Attorney General Jordan Brown to review the enforcement guidelines being used and ensure that proper discretion is being used to to treat people fairly.
