The federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans says the value of the snow crab fishery is up this year compared to 2016.
Multiple fishing areas in the Gulf of St. Lawrence have been closed to protect right whales, a move that has impacted snow crab, rock crab and lobster fisheries.
Fishermen have expressed concerns over the financial impact of the closures but DFO says snow crab landings are valued at roughly 148-million dollars so far this year compared to 112-million dollars at the same point in 2016.
