Charlottetown Islanders were 0 for 6 on the power play in Saint John Wednesday night as the Sea Dogs captured a 5 – 3 victory.
It was Donovan Arsenault with the hat trick and an assist to lift the Western Warriors to a 5 – 1 win over home ice Central Attack in game 1 of the Bantam AAA championship last night at Simmons in Charlottetown.
Calgary Flames are gaining ground in the Western Conference playoff race. They beat the Buffalo Sabres 5-1 to snap a four-game slide and jump into 10th place with 76 points. Calgary in now a point ahead of idle St. Louis, and within one point of Los Angeles and Colorado. Elsewhere it was was Vancouver falling 2 – 1 to the Coyotes in the last minute of play and Pittsburgh ousted the Flyers 5 – 2.
Eddie MacKenzie and his Island foursome came up with their second win at the Tim Horton’s Brier after defeating Nunavut 14 – 2 to sit at 2 and 5. But the PEI rink won’t move on to the Championship Pool.
Jenna Mae Ellsworth is the UPEI Panther Subway Athlete of the Week. Ellsworth was selected to the AUS tournament all-star team over the weekend at the basketball playoffs where she averaged 22 points per game for the women’s Panthers who made it to the finals before bowing to Acadia 80 – 58.
Fred VanVleet for the tie breaking jumper with 1-point-1 seconds remaining in overtime lifted the Toronto Raptors to a 121-119 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

Action will go ahead in Summerside tonight as the Western Capitals host Woodstock at 7 at Credit Union Place in Maritime Junior play. The Slammers traveled to PEI Wednesday night so tonight’s game is a go, regardless of weather conditions.
The Winnipeg Jets visit the New Jersey Devils looking to extend their win streak to four games. In other action, Ottawa faces Buffalo, Montreal takes on Florida and Edmonton is home to the New York Islanders.

Championship pool action starts today at the Tim Hortons Brier in Regina. Defending champion Brad Gushue leads Team Canada against Manitoba’s Reid Carruthers this afternoon. Northern Ontario’s Brad Jacobs also faces Nova Scotia’s James Murphy also in the afternoon draw.
Cross-country skier Brian McKeever will carry Canada’s flag into the opening ceremonies of the Pyeongchang Paralympics Friday. McKeever is a 10-time gold medalist who’s never marched in the opening ceremonies in his four previous Paralympics. He’ll lead a Canadian squad consisting of 55 athletes.
