The Nature Conservancy of Canada and Island Nature Trust are both welcoming word in the federal budget that there’s significant new funds for conservation.
The Island Nature Trust says the full $1.3 billion will fund efforts to meet a national and international target of 17% protected lands by 2020. With just 3.5% of the Island protected as natural area, PEI is well short of that target.
Over the last ten years, the Nature Conservancy has used $1.6 million in funding from Ottawa on PEI – and matched it locally, raising two dollars to every dollar the feds give. It has resulted in 28 projects across PEI and protecting 755 hectares.
