The Red Cross is looking to recruit more disaster volunteers here in PEI and across the Atlantic region.
Winter is a busy season for the organization’s volunteers who help people forced out of their homes by fire, storms or power outages.
To be a volunteer, you must be at least 19 years old, have a valid driver’s licence, a clear criminal reference check, first aid, and other specialized disaster training that the Red Cross provides at no charge. You must also agree to be available to help 24 hours a day on a rotating schedule.
While some Red Cross volunteers respond only to events in or near their home community, others have gone to larger-scale events like this past summer’s record forest fires in BC and the Fort McMurray fires.
