Today marks a solemn occasion in this country and the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women will mark the day with the annual Charlottetown Memorial Service on this National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
Candles will be lit in remembrance of the 14 women murdered in the Montreal Massacre of 1989 and each of the 10 Island women murdered since that year. The service is taking place today at noon in Memorial Hall at Confederation Centre of the Arts.
The theme of the PEI purple ribbon campaign is “Don t stand by. Stand with. Everyone has a part to play in ending violence against women.”
Participants will include members of the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women, the Aboriginal Women s Association, representatives from government and the community as candle-lighters, family and friends of murdered PEI women, along with guest speaker Treena Smith.
The Union of Public Sector Employees will bring their Silent Witness silhouettes representing Island women who have been murdered by men who knew them.
