The Charlottetown Islanders put up a good effort in their opening night tilt in the Quebec Major Jr. Hockey League but lost 3-1 to the visiting Moncton Wild Cats. Moncton started former Islanders Mark Grametbauer in the nets. He made 24 saves in his debut against his former team mates. Matt Welsh had 25 saves for the Islanders.
Jeremy McKenna, Daniil Kuzmin and Liam Dunda scored for Moncton which broke up a 1-1 tie in the third.
Gregor MacLeod scored the lone Islanders goal.
Charlottetown hosts the Halifax Mooseheads today at 3.00 at the Eastlink Centre.
In other games, Cape Breton got by Acadie-Bathurst, 3-2 in a shootout.

The Summerside Western Capitals are 0-2 to start the Maritime Jr. season with five straight games on the road. They lost 6-2 in Yarmouth to the Mariners, last night and play the South Shore Lumberjacks tonight.
The Mariners led 5-0 by the end of the second. Ben Chipman with two goals.
Kallum Muirhead and TJ Shea replied for the Cap in the third.

The UPEI men’s hockey Panthers fell 7-4 in pre-season play at Acadia. The Axemen took a 2-0 lead in the first and led 3-0 just 8 minute into the second.
Filip Rydstrom scored twice for the Panthers. Darcy Ashley and David Mazurek scored once each.
Both teams are 1-1. The Panthers play Saint Mary’s in Bridgewater today.
The women’s Panthers are in Moncton.

NHL pre-season included former Islander Daniel Sprong scoring for Pittsburgh in a 4-3 edging of Columbus.
Toronto blanked Buffalo, 3-0 with Curtis McElhinney in the nets.
Calgary over Arizona, 4-2 and Edmonton dropped Vancouver, 5-3.

Ryan Goins had a big night for the Toronto Blue Jays. He hit a grand slam and also pulled the hidden ball trick to make an out as the Jays slammed the NY Yankees, 8-1.
Teoscar Hernandez and Russell Martin also homered. Marco Estrada allowed just 3 hits through 7 innings. Aaron Judge got his 46 homer for the Yanks.
Boston’s magic number to clinch the A.L. East is down to 4. The Red Sox got by Cincinnati, 5-4.
Rafael Devers hit a three-run homer and David Price was effective on the mound.
The Los Angeles Dodgers clinched their 5th straight N.L. West title with a 4-2 doubling of San Francisco.

A big night for Island born driver Mark MacDonald who got career win #6,000 as Atlanta set a track record at Vernon Downs, New York in 1.54 for two-year old trotting fillies in the New York Sires Stakes. Had added another win on the program and now has 6,001.
