Charlottetown City Councillor Eddie Rice is taking a medical leave of absence, effective immediately.
In a statement from City Hall issued this afternoon, Councillor Rice says for the last two years, he has been “struggling with how to deal with family”, and therefore his own personal issues.
Councillor Rice says some people who know him are aware of his personal struggles and he recognizes the importance of taking the time to deal with those issues. He says that time is now and he thanks those who’ve shown him kindness.
Rice’s comments and leave of absence come on the heels of a recent stay-away-order issued by Holland College against the Ward 1 Councillor for a July 13th incident at the college’s Florence Simmons Performance Hall.
In his statement Friday, Councillor Rice says he’s asking for his privacy to be respected while he’s on medical leave and he and his doctor will decide when he is able to return to city hall. He says his constituents should know other members of Council will address any of their issues in the meantime.
