Week 1 of the Canada Summer Games is in the books with the second wave of PEI athletes getting ready for the second week.
Chef de Mission Brian McFeely was pleased with the first week. No medals but many personal bests and team records that included the best finish ever in girls soccer. The Island team lost 3-1 on penalty kicks to Saskatchewan but placed 8th.
A young Island boys softball team lost to Newfoundland-Labrador 9-6 but finished 6th.
The boys basketball team won 76-65 over Newfoundland-Labrador to finish 9th with a 3-2 record. PEI led by Zack Wall with 25 points.
Bailey Smith was 1st in the 200 metre B final in athletics and was 9th overall on the track.

The lack of pitching depth on the Toronto Blue Jays was pretty evident in 16-7 bombing by the Houston Astros last night. The Astros enjoyed a nine run 4th inning and connected for four homers among their 18 hits.
Mitch Moreland hit a walk-off homer in the 11th as the first Boston Red Sox got by the Chicago White Sox, 3-2. It was their 10th extra inning win this season.
The Red Sox are 3 up on the Yankees who lost 7-2 in Cleveland. The Tribe got its 9th straight win at home.
Yu Darvish had a successful debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 6-0 shutout over the Mets in New York.

The Edmonton Eskimos are 6-0 in the CFL West after a 33-28 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Winnipeg improved to 4-2. The Bombers got by Ottawa, 33-30.

Canada over Sweden, 7-4 in the World Junior Showcase in hockey in Plymouth, Michigan. Canada is 2-0 but had to come back down 4-3.
The Canadian juniors play the USA tonight.

The Charlottetown Islanders have two games in Saint John with the Alpines in New Brunswick Senior baseball this afternoon. The Islanders are 10-18.

The PEI Juniors host the Fredericton Royals in the first two games of the Best of 5 second round playoff series in NB Junior baseball beginning at noon at Memorial Field.

Harness racing at 6.00 at Red Shores in Charlottetown. The 14 dash card has the 13th race as the preferred tonight. Crombie A with driver Adam Merner is the favourite in the seven horse field.
