Dr. Martha Carmichael has begun work as the province’s first internist geriatrician, providing specialized health care to Island seniors.
Dr. Carmichael’s position, which began May 1st, is part of a $1.2 million allocation for the provincial Geriatric Program.
Health and Wellness Minister Robert Henderson says the addition of Dr. Carmichael supports government’s efforts to provide appropriate, timely, and integrated health care for older Islanders.
Islanders need to be referred to the provincial Geriatric Program by a primary care provider. Once the referral is received, an assessment is carried out at home; in a long-term care, community care, or acute care facility; or at the Provincial Geriatric Program office.
