A dozen Island firefighters from the Forestry Department will depart on Monday for the B.C. interior where 160 wild fires are raging and thousands of homes and businesses are threatened. It’s the largest contingent the Island has ever sent to a national emergency.
PEI Communities, Land and Environment Minister Robert Mitchell says the Island has sent several firefighters to many parts of western and northern Canada to help battle out of control blazes that have threatened different communities.
Eleven of the firefighters will be active at ground level battling the blazes while the 12th member will act as a liaison representative with the team that will join Newfoundland-Labrador members in B.C.
