It’s going to be a busy Canada Day in Charlottetown.
The Island capital will ring in 150 years later tonight with a huge fireworks display.
There are several other communities around the Island including Summerside that will be celebrating Canada’s birthday.
There are several tall ships in port in both Charlottetown and Summerside.
Free deck tours will be provided in Charlottetown from 10 this morning until 5 this evening and again tomorrow.
The HMCS Charlottetown and Canada C3 are also in port.
STREET CLOSURES
There are some street closures in Charlottetown today.
The Victoria Park Roadway from Brighton Road to Terry Fox Drive is closed until after tonight’s fireworks.
The Victoria Park parking lot off Brighton Road is closed.
Only people with disabled parking permits will be allowed to park.
Police ask that you not park along Brighton in the park area.
Use the parking lot off Terry Fox Drive or to parking lot to the left of Stan Macpherson Way off Water Street.
You can also use T3 Transit today until 7 this evening.
There are also some road closures in Great George Street area this morning until 11 am for the bell ringing ceremony at St. Dunstan’s.
Great George is closed between Sydney Street and Dorchester Street until 11 this morning. No parking in that area as well.
BELLS OF THE BASILICA
The bells will be ringing again this morning at St. Dunstan’s Basilica.
A special ceremony will be held at 9.30 in front of the Basilica as the bells will ring for the first time in 40 years.
The eighteen bells were refurbished in South Carolina. They were tuned and rewired.
Work was done to put supports in place in the north tower of the church along with a new bell frame.
Premier Wade MacLauchlan, Mayor Clifford Lee and Bishop Greco will be at the the ceremony.
The bells will ring just after 10 this morning.
BUSY FRIDAY
Yesterday was one of the busiest days of the year in the Island capital with what appears to be thousands of visitors in Charlottetown for the long holiday weekend.
The malls and shopping areas were packed.
It took some people up to 40 minutes to get from the downtown to the outlying communities around the city.
Traffic was slow moving most of the afternoon.
