Island fishermen with licenses for snow crab are heading to the fishing grounds to lay their gear today.
Many of them are lobster fishers and trap setting is tomorrow so they will have to return to the Island once the snow crab gear is put in the water.
It takes about 4-5 hours to get to the snow crab area in the Gulf. And then a quick turnaround to get back for Monday.
The fishery began right after midnight, officially.
Island fishermen go to Area 12 for snow crab. It has an exculsionary zone within it to protect the endangered North Atlantic right whales.
Setting day is tomorrow for Island lobsters fishermen.
It should be a good day weather wise although showers are in the forecast.
