The Summerside Western Capitals downed visiting Woodstock 6 – 2 at Credit Union Place in Maritime Junior action Thursday night. Kallum Muirhead had two goals and an assist to lead the the Caps in their final regular season home game.
Connor McDavid tied the game late in the third period, then scored the shootout winner to lift the Edmonton Oilers to a 2-1 home win over the New York Islanders. Elsewhere, the Florida Panthers with a 5-0 win over Montreal…the Senators fell 4-3 to the last-place Buffalo Sabres in a shootout…Winnipeg beat the Devils 3-2 in New Jersey…and the Bruins edged the Flyers 3 – 2.
Defending champion Brad Gushue, 2013 champion Brad Jacobs of Northern Ontario and Ontario’s John Epping all improved to 8-and-1 and secured their spots in the Tim Horton’s Brier playoffs with wins in the evening draw.
PEI’s standout, Ashley Plaggenhoef, will be wearing the maroon and black this fall as a member of the Holland Hurricanes women’s basketball team.
The Island Storm will have a Cancer Awareness Game in partnership on Sunday, March 18 at 2pm for their game against the Cape Breton Highlanders. The entire Storm team will be wearing custom purple jerseys, which fans can bid on in a silent auction after the game, with all the proceeds being donated to the Canadian Cancer Society. There will also be free admission for any cancer patients and survivors on P.E.I.

The Heather Moyse Homecoming celebration scheduled for tonight at Credit Union Place in Summerside has been rescheduled to next Friday night, March 16th at 6:30 p.m.
The PEI Open Wrestling Tournament PEI scheduled for this weekend has been rescheduled for next Saturday, March 17th…same time and place.

Summerside Western Capitals have the day off after their final regular season home game at the CUP last night saw them down Woodstock Slammers 6 – 2. The Caps are back in action tomorrow night in Miramichi and have already clinched a playoff berth.

The Jr C best-of-seven final kicks off tonight at Cody Banks Arena as Sherwood hosts Tignish. Puck drops at 7:20.
Game 3 of PEI Major Midget championship sees the leading Kensington Wild home Saturday night hosting the Charlottetown Pride. Kensington leads the best of seven 2 – 0.
The Midget AAA final starts tomorrow night in Cornwall as Pownal takes on the Matrix at 7:50 in game 1 of that best of five.
Midget Triple A female final series starts tonight as the Kings County Kings challenge the Mid-Isle Wildcats at the APM Centre at 7:30.
The Holland Hurricanes ringette team travel to Halifax to take part in the University Cup Championships this weekend. The Canes face Acadia tonight at 9 then the Huskies at 9:45 Saturday morning, followed by Dalhousie at 4:15. The semi-finals and finals will take place on Sunday.
A quick turnaround for the Ottawa Senators. They host the Calgary Flames tonight, one night after a 4-3 shootout loss at home to the Buffalo Sabres. The Senators have lost seven of their last nine games. Later, the Vancouver Canucks host the Minnesota Wild. Vancouver has lost six of its last eight.
