The P-E-I government is protesting a potential clawback of benefits for grandparents and other caregivers who look after children whose parents are unable to safely care for them.
The province announced in Novemeber it would give a 700-dollar benefit every month to families who care for children for safety reasons.
The province now says the Canada Revenue Agency is reviewing whether it will reduce the federal benefit given to families that are receiving payments from the P-E-I government.
Provincial Family and Human Services Minister Tina Mundy says that’s unacceptable, and she will be reaching out to the federal Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and the federal Minister of National Revenue to inform them that the PEI government rejects the idea of clawing back any benefits.
